Giving the Gift of Health on Father’s Day
June 17th was Father’s Day, and I am a father of three remarkable children— including a baby girl who is just 8 months old. My situation is somewhat unique as I have a large gap in time since I was last a new father. My first two children, now 12 and 15, are from a previous marriage. I recently married a wonderful woman who is younger than I am, and she has always yearned to be a mother. Because of my love for her, I jumped in again with both feet! This was a big commitment on my part and has me rethinking the second half of my life. There are major implications and responsibilities that come with having children, not the least of which is the importance of being there. By that I mean being there mentally, as well as being in good physical health.
I have always been a healthy person. I was a Division 1 college athlete, I eat relatively well, I exercise regularly, I am an avid mountain biker and snow boarder, and I’ve had no major illnesses (just a few crashes from time to time). But the importance of staying healthy and living longer has become a very real focus of mine. I want to see this new baby grow into a woman. I want to see how her life unfolds, along with my other two children, and I want to support her and my wife through the whole journey.
So, rather than receive gifts from my children on Father’s Day, I decided it is my turn to give gifts. A commitment to stay active, to stay relevant, to eat properly, and to continue to be diligent about what I put into my body.
